SkillsUSA: Taking the Show on the Road
For the past 10 years, Washburn Tech students have traveled to state and national SkillsUSA leadership conferences. Our students have brought home more than 338 state medals – 104 which are gold. Fifty-six of our students have placed in the top ten at the national conference – eight of which were national medal recipients.
The Kansas chapter of SkillsUSA hosts an annual competition in April in Hutchinson, Kansas. The week-long national competition is held in Louisville, Kentucky, in June. In both events, students work against the clock and each other to prove their expertise in occupations such as computer technology, cabinetmaking, precision machining, culinary arts and advertising design. The competitions highlight the best career and technical students in each state and eventually the nation.
Each year, Washburn Tech absorbs the total cost of sending students to SkillsUSA. This project would partially alleviate the cost of transportation and lodging for the students, freeing up some money for additional curriculum opportunities and equipment.
THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
This past academic year, 117 Washburn Tech students boarded buses to travel to state and national Skills USA competitions. In Hutchinson, 92 students competed in 127 contests, earning 59 medals, 34 of which were gold.
In June, 25 of the gold-medal winners and numerous instructors traveled to Louisville. All 25 students placed in the top 20 at the national level – a remarkable feat in a field of more than 6,000 students. Thirteen Tech students placed in the top 10 in the nation in their respective competitions. One student received a second place silver medal in his technical skilled event.
Washburn Tech had its first student became a SkillsUSA national officer – treasurer for the National College Post-secondary Officer team. This young man earned the highest level of leadership in this organization and traveled as an ambassador around the nation for SkillsUSA.
The experience students gain from these contests is priceless. They spend countless hours honing their skills, challenging themselves, preparing for competition. They compete among the nation’s best tech ed students. And, year after year, they walk away having represented Washburn Tech with pride and skill.
